Divorce Mediation

Divorce Mediation

Divorce Mediation uses a trained, neuttral third party who assists in facilitating the negotiations for the mutual gain of both spouses.

The divorce mediator works to keep the discussions on the interests of the parties and on creative solutions that benefit both sides. Instead of adversaries seeking to "win" the conflict, the mediator and the couple become a team whose objective is to find the solution that works for both sides.

Ms. Johnston is a founding mediator of the Compass Mediation Group located in Leesburg, Virginia.  She currently serves as legal and tax counsel helping couples to understand how Virginia law and federal tax laws can impact their decisions and their property settlement agreements.  In addition to Ms. Johnston, the Compass Mediation Group has three other mediators who provide full service support to each couple;  guiding them through the complex web of parenting matters, and all legal, tax, emotional and financial matters associated with divorce.  For more information about the Compass Mediation Group team of experts, please see their website: WWW.COMPASSMEDIATIONGROUP.COM.

Benefits of Divorce Mediation Services:

  • Cost Effective. Much less expensive than litigation
  • Voluntary. You can stop at any time
  • Confidential. Your information is protected
  • Private. Information is not on public record
  • Expediant. Typically much quicker than litigation
  • Non-Binding. Nothing is binding until both sides agree
  • Respectful. Maintains a healthy working relationship
  • Control. The parties define the solutions and thus tend to be happier with the results

Although each case is unique, the divorce mediation process is a proven one with statistically high success rates.  All agreements adhere to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and U.S. federal tax laws.

During sessions, respect is critical and there are ground rules to keep the discussions on the issues and not on emotions. This makes it safer to discuss possible solutions and keeps communication open.
